Metro-North commuters and area residents alike had a reason to cheer Friday as Donut Crazy officially threw open its doors at the Westport Train Station at about dawn.
Donut Crazy has developed a cult following across Fairfield County for its enormous doughnuts and unusual flavor combos.
On opening day, Gabby Jordan of Stamford had her hands full with a Nutella doughnut. It’s a chocolate-based doughnut with a layer of Nutella and Cocoa Rice Krispies with more Nutella on top.
“It’s nice with the Rice Krispies, which balances out the sweetness,” Jordan said of her fist-sized breakfast concoction.
Mike Taylor, a partner in the Donut Crazy business, said they were enjoying a steady stream of customers at the newly renovated shop located right by the tracks.
Morning commuters can pick from a selection of Donut Crazy’s signature flavors — including French toast, birthday cake, red velvet cake, PB&J, peanut butter cup, cannoli, cookie dough, black hawk and morning buzz — as well as coffee and breakfast sandwiches.
The 1,000-square-foot shop rented from the town will be open daily until 8 p.m.
For those looking for “real” food, there is also a cooler filled with grab-and-go meal options, with an interesting selection of pastas, salads, soups and sandwiches.
The food is stocked from Nom-eez, which serves up Vietnamese food and is attached to Donut Crazy in Bridgeport, and Match, a Norwalk-based restaurant offering American fare.
